Republic Day: How does India choose its chief guest for 26 January parade

India will mark its 77th Republic Day on 26 January - the day when the country adopted its constitution and formally became a republic, breaking from its colonial past.

The annual grand parade will take place along Delhi's iconic central boulevard, with military tanks rolling past and fighter jets roaring overhead as thousands watch.

The parade is a spectacle in itself, but attention is also focused on who is occupying the most prominent seats at the ceremony. This year, it will be European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa.

India has invited them as chief guests for the celebrations, placing the European Union at the centre of one of the country's most prestigious state events.

On this day, India turns the heart of its capital into a stage. Thousands of troops march before cheering crowds, armoured vehicles move down the Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath or King's Avenue) and colourful tableaux or floats pass by spectators in Delhi, while millions more watch on their screens across the country.

The parade is presided over by the Indian president, with the chief guest seated alongside - closer to the presidential chair than even the senior-most government officials.

Who sits next to India's president has long been read as more than a matter of protocol. Over the decades, the choice of chief guest has come to be closely watched as an indicator of India's foreign policy priorities and the relationships Delhi wants to highlight at a particular moment, experts say.

The practice began in 1950 with the then Indonesian president, Sukarno, attending India's first Republic Day parade. In its early years as a republic, India prioritised ties with other newly-independent, external countries - a focus reflected in its early choice of chief guests.

Since then, the parade has hosted leaders from across the world, reflecting shifts in India's global relations and strategic priorities. The chief guests have been from leaders of neighbouring countries - such as Bhutan and Sri Lanka - to heads of state and government from major powers, including the US and the UK.

The UK has featured as the chief guest five times - including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip - reflecting the long and complex history between the two countries. Leaders from France and Russia (formerly Soviet Union) have also been invited nearly five times since 1950, reflecting India's long-standing strategic ties with the two countries.

With such a wide range of past guests, the question is how India decides who receives an invitation in a particular year.

The selection process is largely out of public view. Former diplomats and media reports, external say it typically begins within the foreign ministry, which prepares a shortlist of potential invitees. The final decision is taken by the prime minister's office, followed by official communication with the select countries - a process that can take several months.

A former foreign ministry official speaking on condition of anonymity said: "Strategic objectives, regional balance and whether a country has been invited before are all taken into account."

Former Indian ambassador to the US Navtej Sarna said a lot of thought goes into the decision making.

"It's a balance between important partners, neighbours and major powers," he said, adding that availability of the state leader during that time also plays a crucial role.

Foreign policy analyst Harsh V Pant said the evolving list of chief guests mirrors India's changing engagement with the world. "If you think of the EU delegation this year, with its leadership coming, it's very clear that we are doubling down on our engagement with the EU."

He added that most likely a trade deal would be announced - signalling that India and the European bloc are on the same page when it comes to the current geopolitical situation.

This comes as India continues to engage with the US on a trade deal. The talks, which have been going on for almost a year, have strained their relationship since the US imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods, the highest in Asia, including penalties linked to India's purchase of Russian oil.

"It [the choice of the parade's chief guest] gives you a sense of India's priorities at that particular point - which geography it wants to focus on, or whether there is a milestone it wants to mark," Pant said, pointing out that India continued to engage closely with the global south.

In 2018, for example, leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) were invited as chief guests. It was the first time a regional grouping was invited - marking 25 years of India's engagement with the bloc, Pant added.

At the same time, some absences from the guest list have also reflected strained relationships.

Pakistani leaders attended twice as chief guests before the neighbours went to war in 1965. Islamabad has not been invited thereafter - a sign of continuing strain in ties. The only time China attended was when Marshal Ye Jianying came in 1958, four years before the two countries went to war over their disputed border.

Analysts says India's parade stands apart from similar military displays elsewhere in the world for a number of reasons. The fact that India has a guest almost every year is one of them.

Also, for most countries, these parades commemorate military victories. Like Russia's Victory Day marks the defeat of Germany in World War Two, France's Bastille Day celebrates the start of the French Revolution and the eventual fall of the monarchy, and China's military parade marks their victory over Japan in World War Two.

India's celebration, by contrast, is centred on the constitution, says Pant.

"For many other countries, these celebrations are related to victories in war. We don't celebrate that. We celebrate becoming a constitutional democracy - the coming into effect of the constitution."

Unlike military parades in many Western capitals, India's Republic Day also blends displays of its military capability with cultural performances and regional tableaux, projecting both power and diversity.

Beyond strategy and symbolism, the parade often leaves a more personal impression on visiting leaders.

Man shot and killed during Minneapolis immigration crackdown, National Guard activated

Family members identified the man who was killed as Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care unit nurse who had protested U.S. President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown in his city. After the shooting, an angry crowd gathered and protesters clashed with federal immigration officers, who wielded batons and deployed flash bangs.

The Minnesota National Guard was assisting local police at the direction of Governor Tim Walz, officials said. Guard troops were sent to both the shooting site and to a federal building where officials have squared off with protesters daily.

Information about what led up to the shooting was limited, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said.

Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that federal officers were conducting an operation and fired “defensive shots” after a man with a handgun approached them and “violently resisted” when officers tried to disarm him.

In bystander videos of the shooting that emerged soon after, Pretti is seen with a phone in his hand but none appears to show him with a visible weapon.

Mr. O’Hara said police believe the man was a “lawful gun owner with a permit to carry.”

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said during a news conference that Pretti had shown up to “impede a law enforcement operation.” She questioned why he was armed but did not offer detail about whether Pretti drew the weapon or brandished it at officers.

The officer who shot the man is an eight-year Border Patrol veteran, federal officials said.

Mr. Trump weighed in on social media by lashing out at Mr. Walz and the Minneapolis mayor.

Mr. Trump shared images of the gun that immigration officials said was recovered and said: “What is that all about? Where are the local police? Why weren’t they allowed to protect ICE Officers?”

Mr. Trump, a Republican, said the Democratic governor and mayor “are inciting Insurrection, with their pompous, dangerous and arrogant rhetoric.”

Pretti was shot just over a mile from where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Good on January 7, sparking widespread protests.

Pretti’s family released a statement Saturday (January 24, 2026) evening saying they are “heartbroken but also very angry,” and calling him a kindhearted soul who wanted to make a difference in the world through his work as a nurse.

“The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Mr. Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed,” the family statement said. “Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man.”

In a bystander video of Saturday’s (January 24, 2026) shooting obtained by The Associated Press, protesters can be heard blowing whistles and shouting profanities at federal officers on Nicollet Avenue.

The video shows an officer shoving a person who is wearing a brown jacket, skirt and black tights and carrying a water bottle. That person reaches out for a man and the two link up, embracing. The man, wearing a brown jacket and black hat, seems to be holding his phone up toward the officer.

The same officer shoves the man in his chest and the two, still embracing, fall back.

The video then shifts to a different part of the street and then comes back to the two individuals unlinking from each other. The video shifts focus again and then shows three officers surrounding the man.

Soon at least seven officers surround the man. One is on the man’s back and another who appears to have a canister in his hand strikes a blow to the man’s chest. Several officers try to bring the man’s arms behind his back as he appears to resist. As they pull his arms, his face is briefly visible on camera. The officer with the canister strikes the man near his head several times.

A shot rings out, but with officers surrounding the man, it’s not clear from where the shot came. Multiple officers back off the man after the shot. More shots are heard. Officers back away and the man lies motionless on the street.

The police chief appealed for calm, both from the public and from federal law enforcement.

“Our demand today is for those federal agencies that are operating in our city to do so with the same discipline, humanity and integrity that effective law enforcement in this country demands,” the chief said. “We urge everyone to remain peaceful.”

Gregory Bovino of U.S. Border Patrol, who has commanded the Trump administration’s big-city immigration campaign, said the officer who shot the man had extensive training as a range safety officer and in using less-lethal force.

“This is only the latest attack on law enforcement. Across the country, the men and women of DHS have been attacked, shot at,” he said.

Mr. Walz said he had no confidence in federal officials and that the State would lead the investigation into the latest fatal shooting.

But Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, said during a news conference that federal officers blocked his agency from the shooting scene even after it obtained a signed judicial warrant.

Amid the unrest, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats will not vote for a spending package that includes money for DHS. Mr. Schumer’s statement increases the possibility that the government could partially shut down on January 30, 2026 when funding runs out.

Protesters converged at the scene of the shooting despite dangerously cold weather.

At midday Saturday (January 24, 2026), the worst of an extreme cold wave was over, but the temperature was still -6 degrees (-21 Celsius).

After the shooting, an angry crowd gathered and screamed profanities at federal officers, calling them “cowards” and telling them to go home. One officer responded mockingly as he walked away, telling them: “Boo hoo.” Agents elsewhere shoved a yelling protester into a car. Protesters dragged garbage dumpsters from alleyways to block the streets, and people who gathered chanted, “ICE out now” and “Observing ICE is not a crime.”

As dark fell, hundreds of people gathered quietly by a growing memorial at the site of the shooting. Some carried signs saying “Justice for Alex Pretti.” Others chanted Pretti’s and Good’s names. A doughnut shop and a clothing store nearby stayed open, offering protesters a warm place as well as water, coffee and snacks.

Daily Briefing: India-EU FTA to reduce reliance on China, Russia, US; Border 2 movie review

What emerged as a rallying cry in the early 1900s and became closely associated with India’s freedom struggle, the country’s national song, Vande Mataram, is now back for discussion on the government table. This time, with the question of whether its disrespect should attract penalties? High-level debates over possible protocols for its recitation – similar to those for the national anthem Jana Gana Mana – are underway. In a meeting recently convened by the Ministry of Home Affairs, senior government officials deliberated ways to formalise the singing/recitation of the national song along the lines of the anthem. As we inch closer to the state visit of the European Union leaders to India between January 25 to 27 , High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas said Friday that the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is a “strategic choice” and provides a chance to reduce reliance on China, Russia and US. In an exclusive interview to The Indian Express, Kallas, who holds the rank equivalent to Foreign Minister, said that the EU and India will sign a new Security and Defence Partnership on January 27 at the India-EU leaders’ summit. World’s oldest cave art discovered in Indonesia’s Muna island

Archaeologists have found that handprints stencilled on limestone caves on the Indonesian island of Muna could be up to 67,800 years old, making them the oldest known paintings in the world.

The tan-coloured drawings analysed by Indonesian and Australian researchers were made by blowing pigment over hands placed against the cave walls, leaving an outline, scientists said on Wednesday.

According to the Jakarta Post news outlet, archaeologist Adhi Agus Oktaviana from Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has been looking for hand stencils in the Muna island region, in Sulawesi province, since 2015.

Adhi found the hand stencils, which have now been dated, under newer paintings in the cave of a person riding a horse alongside a chicken.

At first, Adhi said it was difficult to prove to his co-researchers that the stencils were hands as he believed, but he “finally found some spots that looked like human fingers”.

Some of the fingertips were also tweaked to look more pointed.

“The oldest hand stencil described here is distinctive because it belongs to a style found only in Sulawesi,” said Maxime Aubert, a specialist in archaeological science at Griffith University in Australia who helped lead the research published on Wednesday in the journal Nature.

“The tips of the fingers were carefully reshaped to make them appear pointed,” Aubert said.

Aubert’s co-author, Adam Brumm, who is also an archaeologist at Griffith University, said it appeared the people who painted the hands may have been trying to depict something else.

“It was almost as if they were deliberately trying to transform this image of a human hand into something else – an animal claw perhaps,” said Brumm.

“Clearly, they had some deeper cultural meaning, but we don’t know what that was. I suspect it was something to do with these ancient peoples’ complex symbolic relationship with the animal world,” he said.

The researchers determined the minimum age of the image by analysing small amounts of the element uranium in mineral layers that gradually formed atop the pigment.

After taking five-millimetre samples of small clusters of calcite that formed on the walls of the limestone caves, the researchers then zapped the layers of rock with a laser to measure how the uranium decayed over time, compared to a more stable radioactive element called thorium.

This “very precise” technique gave the scientists a clear minimum age for the painting, Aubert said.

The scientists also established that the Muna caves had been used for rock art many times over a long period. Some of the ancient art was even painted over up to 35,000 years later, Aubert said.

The new discovery is also more than 15,000 years older than the previous art found in the Sulawesi region by the same team in 2024.

The region surrounding Indonesia is known for some of the world’s most ancient archaeological finds, alongside neighbouring East Timor and Australia.

Adhi said the cave art provides new evidence supporting the theory that there was early human migration through Sulawesi.

“It also shows that our ancestors were not only great sailors,” Adhi said, according to the Jakarta Post, “but also artists.”

Aboriginal people living in Australia have one of the oldest continuous living cultures on earth, as documented by archaeological evidence dating back at least 60,000 years.
